I, personally think consciousness, as we usually think of it, emerges from complex interactions in high level multi-level multidimensional information processing, that it fundamentally doesn't exist, but is an illusion. But it can be seen the other way around, as some level of it existing in every system that can carry information. Is space conscient to some degree? Are the Oceans? Is the human race as a whole?
