Dalai Lama literally means ‘ocean monk’, so named because he is regarded as ‘the ocean of compassion’.
Lama corresponds to the word better known Sanskrit word 'guru'. So he is the guru of compassion. He is a living Buddha, a Bodhisattva (enlightened being) of Compassion and the 14th incarnation of the original embodiment of compassion.
He says he might not be reincarnated again (I wonder why... lol)
