It's a powerful argument. I myself have been convinced by a similar reasoning: "You better come out right now young man. Or else."
But Jesus/tripartite god plays the part even better. He is both the good cop and bad cop. He is also the door (a neutral cop that lets you exercise your free will if you so wish to murder little kids).
